Anti science

I just read the most disturbing article from the Lancet, describing the Lyme disease “movement” as an increasingly disturbing anti-science group that is a threat to the public.

The tick that bit me didn’t ask first, if I’d like to be part of this movement, and had he, I would have declined.

These doctors can’t be serious.

But they are, and I’ve seen it, I’ve spoken with them. I’ve been left slack jawed as they tell me that just because I was normal before the tick bite and now I’m not, doesn’t mean I have anything. They’ve relied solely on the numbers on their computer, disregarding the rashes and the pain and the fatigue and the disorientation. They have convinced themselves, and now I have to go to the blackmarket, getting antibiotics from Russia like they’re illegal drugs.

The Lyme community is one of the strongest ones I’ve ever been a part of, and I think that’s because of the lack of support from elsewhere. I’ve never been more humiliated then I was after seeing that doctor, and I’m not alone. But now I know why, I know whose work he follows, I know what category he’s put me in. So maybe I’ll be prepared next time.

Or maybe I’ll just mail him a box full of ticks and hope for the best. See how he likes it on the other side of the..whatever.
