Regulatory capture in the world of synthetic food dye
The World Health Organizations Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee
on Food Additives (JECFA) is Health Canada's main source for the creation of the Food and Drug acts chemical additives division.
Unfortunately, influence from the food dye industry itself by way of the The International Association of Colour Manufacturers has unduly influenced the expert committee. The studies the IACM provided were industry-funded. The bias in industry-funded studies is well-documented. The IACM was providing much of the information the World Health Organizations Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee used in creating their chemical additives research.
The power of IACM can't be understated. Last year the IACM sued the state of Virginia when they tried to ban food dye. A federal judge stayed the injunction. The food dye industry is one of the most powerful in the world.
Health Canada must extricate itself from the industry-captured American food dye industry and invest in real-world scientific exploration of the neurological effects on Canadian children. The mental health of the next generation relies on this.
